It Saint over with my side
ST MIRREN....................3 ST JOHNSTONE............2
Thrilled St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin saluted his battling players after two late goals enabled them to stage a stirring fightback.
Having dumped Rangers out of the Betfred Cup on Wednesday night, it was another 3-2 thriller in Paisley as Saints moved up to eighth in the table.
Goodwin said: “I know my boys have got great character and will keep going right until the end.
“They weren’t satisfied with taking the game to extra time the other night, they wanted to get that vital winner.
“Today it would have been easy to take a point but credit the players.
“There’s plenty more to come from us. We’re 11 games unbeaten now which is a great run.”
It started off poorly for the hosts with St Johnstone going in front from the spot. Joe Shaughnessy was clumsy as he barged into David Wotherspoon.
Saints keeper Jak Alnwick went the right way but Stevie May’s penalty squeezed just under him.
St Mirren forced their way back into the game five minutes later when Ethan Erhahon rattled an effort into the ground where the bounce of the ball beat
Zander Clark. Parity didn’t last for long as Scott Tanser bundled an effort into the net for the Perth Saints.
St Mirren were aided in their recovery as Jason Kerr was dismissed. The St Johnstone skipper saw a straight red for a nasty tackle on Ilkay Durmus.
Goodwin’s side finally levelled when Lee Erwin headed in at the back post.
Kyle McAllister then set up Jon Obika with a free-kick. Obika had plenty of time as he headed in St Mirren’s dramatic winner.
