I won’t beg the Anglos

- Scott McDermott

Steve Clarke insists he won’t beg Anglo-Scots in the Premier League to pull on a dark blue shirt for the Euro finals.

And if the likes of Southampton striker Che Adams or Aston Vil la full- back Matt Targett want to be considered, Clarke insists they should be knocking on his door.

The Scotland boss is looking forward to our first major tournament in 23 years this summer.

A core group helped us get there and the manager is keen to show loyalty.

But there are still places up for grabs and Adams in particular could be looked at given his eligibility.

Clarke is refusing to rule anyone out but won’t plead with any player to represent the nation.

Adams, Targett and West Ham’s Ryan Frederiks have

ADAMS call-up talk all been linked with a call-up in the past – despite already featuring for England at youth level.

And Clarke said: “It’s a really difficult one. I’m a Scotsman born and bred and if players have been approached to play for the national team and have turned us down – then I’m not so keen to go chasing after them.

“If there are players out there who have been approached and rejected us for whatever reason – and normally that’s to play for another country – then it’s up to them to chase us.

“They have to put their case to us about why they should be involved. That’s my gut feeling on it.

“Has anybody offered themselves to us? Nobody that’s been good enough. No, I haven’t had anyone.

“I have to make sure I get the balance right between being loyal to the players who got us there and trying to improve the squad.

“The harmony of the squad is a big thing.”
