OLD BOY HAS ROBBED US

Anton gutted as Thomson haunts Ton with leveller

- Lindsay Herron

Alloa Ath.............1 Morton.................1 Robert Thomson came back to haunt his old club with a late leveller to leave Covid-hit Ton gutted.

Interim Morton boss Anton McElhone was adamant this team should have been out of sight long before Thomson struck seven minutes from time.

He reckons it’s a good sign they were so disappointed after their Covid problems in the lead-up to the match.

McElhone said: “The players are really gutted they haven’t won and that’s a good sign.

“I felt there was a foul in the build-up to Alloa’s goal but we should have had the game won before that as we had enough chances. The reality is this virus is going to affect every club but it’s not an excuse here because we dominated the game.”

Alloa had some great chances in the first half and they didn’t enjoy much luck either.

Cent re - back Nick y Jamieson had a free header from Innes Murray’s corner in 15 minutes but he put his effort over the bar.

Morton keeper Aidan McAdams was beaten by a sensational Ray Grant shot from 35 yards in 34 minutes that thumped back of f the crossbar. Then Liam Buchanan, who is normally so deadly in the box, spurned an excellent opportunity four minutes later.

He followed up after Kevin Cawley’s shot was blocked.

Surprisingly, he couldn’t hit the target from six yards, albeit under pressure from Sean McGinty.

Buchanan’s time would come though.

Morton were a different outf it in the second half and they grabbed the lead in 65 minutes.

Aidan Nesbitt swung over a corner from the left and Markus Fjortoft produced a header his dad Jan Age would have been proud of to claim his f irst goal in senior football.

Kalvin Orsi and Nesbitt then both missed big chances to clinch the points.

The batt l ing Wasps grabbed a precious point in 83 minutes when Aidan Mc A d ams blocked Buchanan’s shot but sub Thomson followed up to slot home the rebound.

Alloa boss Peter Grant said: “We had the better chances in the first half and we’re missing six players so I’m actually feeling like it’s two points dropped.

“Two of the lads had to get fitness tests just before the game so maybe I’m being a bit harsh on them.

“We didn’t deal with the corner well but we kept battling to get an equaliser and getting it so late I have to be happy with a point.”
