David Wotherspoon believes St Johnstone’s inspirational speakers can help guide them to a Betfred Cup Final spot.
The Saints midfielder insists a host of leaders inside his dressing room can be key in their semi-final against Hibs on Saturday.
It’s a mixed bag of good and bad memories from the big occasions in Wotherspoon’s career but the 30-year- old is adamant the big noises will be holding court at Hampden.
He said: “Apart from the gaffer and Steven McLean, Liam Craig, Liam Gordon, Jason Kerr ... there’s a few that like to speak up and it’s great because it gets everyone riled up and focused on what we want to do. There’s a few that would take command.
“I always go back to the semi with Aberdeen on the way to winning the Scottish Cup in 2014. The first half was a bit of a blur and they were 1- 0 up but I felt we were still in the game.
“We came in at half-time and Steven stood up and gave a big speech, basically about how he was only here once, this could be his last time and we know we can go out and win but we have to fight for it.
“That seemed to spur us on and gave us the belief to go on and win. It was a massive turnaround and set us on course to win the trophy.
“The Aberdeen game shows it’s never over. It’s a one- off game and if you play your best then you can get the outcome you hope for.
“I’m sure all the boys are buzzing to face Hibs and can’t wait to get this game played.”
Wotherspoon i s a lso determined to seize the day and not allow the chance of a final spot to slip away.
He said: “It is crazy how quickly time passes. This is my eighth season at Saints.
“It has gone so quickly, my kids are growing up and everything seems to fly by.
“You have to make the most of your opportunities when they come along and take them. Getting to this f inal would be massive for the club.”
