Stop the fuss
We all want to keep playing says Neilson
Rob b i e NeNe i l s o n confirmed every Championship club wants to keep playing and questioned why the SFA asked if that was the case.
An email from the governing body went out on Friday night to determine whether clubs wanted to keep going. After moving seven points clear, Hearts definitely do.
Goals from Andy Irving, Elliott Frear and Josh Ginnelly meant Kevin Cawley’s header at 2-1 didn’t prove costly.
Jambos boss Neilson said: “We want the season to continue and the feedback I got is every other club in the Championship wanted it to continue.
“We as football coaches and players have a responsibility to entertain people just now, a lot of people are sitting in their house with nothing to do. We can provide them with a focal point to watch and talk about it and hopefully entertain them.
“We have a responsibility to keep this league going.”
The deadlock was broken in spectacular style when Irving sent an unstoppable swerving effort into the top corner.
The away side doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.
A great team move saw Jordan Roberts find Jamie Walker who chipped a first-time cross to the back post where Frear smashed a sliding volley past Neil Parry.
Liam Boyce was introduced in the second half and he latched on to a reverse pass from Walker but his shot was deflected wide of the near post.
A lofted ball over the top after Alloa tried to clear from a corner was right on Walker’s foot. The winger tried to place a volley into the top corner but it was a little too high.
Fellow sub Ginnelly was inches from making it 3-0 after shooting for the bottom corner – but a slight deflection took it just wide.
Any slim hopes of an Alloa f ightback appeared to be extinguished when Lucas Williamson was late on Gary Mackay- Steven and he was shown a second yellow card on his league debut.
But they gave themselves a lifeline when Cawley planted a header across Craig Gordon into the far corner with seven minutes to go.
Boyce had the ball in the net in stoppage time when he pounced on the rebound from a Walker shot but was dismayed to see the offside flag go up.
It didn’t matter as Ginnelly took full advantage of Alloa keeper Parry going forward for a free-kick by collecting possession, burning past Scott Hetherington and rolling into an empty net for 3-1.
Wasps boss Peter Grant was raging at Williamson’s red card. He said: “The sending-off was a disgrace but we’re getting used to that.
“I do feel for the referee at times because the linesman was standing right next to it. Lucas headed the ball against Mackay- Steven’s face but because it was a second yellow I don’t think we can appeal it.”
