A convicted paedophile whose firm gave a £4000 donation to Scottish Labour leader ship contender Anas Sarwar was targeted in a terrifying firebomb campaign.

Cars belonging to Ali Najafian’s family were set ablaze at the estate where he lives in East Kilbride in October.

Firefighters and police attended after a black Range Rover and two other vehicles were destroyed over a three- day period.

Detective Sergeant Craig Melrose said the fires were deliberate and linked. A source said: “The fires affected everyone in the area. “People were worried about what was going to happen every night they went to their bed.

“Ne i g hbou r s were wor r ied that they’d be caught up in what was going on.” Police confirmed their officers were still investigating the attacks.

The Sunday Mail last week told how Sarwar accepted a £ 4000 political donation from Najafian’s A&G Investments Ltd to fund his successful campaign to be party deputy in 2011.

Najafian admitted a catalogue of sickening sex offences against young girls when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court in 1992.

A 12- year- old victim was so traumatised she tried to take her own life and had to undergo counselling.

Earlier this month Najaf ian instructed lawyers to go to court and get a gag order preventing us from revealing details of his past and his cash gift.

But his legal team later decided not to apply for the interdict.

Najafian’s firm has given £ 8000 in total to Scottish Labour – a fur ther £ 2000 went to it s Glasgow Central branch in 2010 months before Anas took over the seat from his dad Mohammad Sarwar. Another £2000 was donated to the party.

Sarwar, 37, is competing against Scot t i sh Labour ’ s hea l th spokeswoman Monica Lennon for the leadership.

He has admitted meeting Najaf ian at party events and knowing his nephew but insists he was unaware of his convictions.

Najaf ian, 64, owns A& G Investments with brother Gholam and has been at the centre of controversy on a number of occasions.

Por table cabins hous ing Pol ish labourers in cramped conditions were uncovered by f iref ighters at a farmhouse he owned in 2005.

In 2006 he was involved in a dispute over plans to pull down a play park on land he owned.

The Sunday Mail attempted to contact Najaf ian through his solicitor but received no response.

Scottish Labour’s leadership bat t le was tr iggered by the resignation of Richard Leonard this month.

Sarwar previously stood for the job in 2017 but he faced quest ions over his fami ly’s business affairs and his decision to send his children to private school.

United Wholesale (Scotland) Ltd, the cash and carry business his dad and former Glasgow MP Mohammad Sarwar built, was criticised for failing to pay the voluntary Real Living Wage.

A spokesman for Najaf ian decl ined to comment on the ongoing police investigation.
