Coming home is A-Oakley

- ■ Fraser Mackie

George Oakley admits he feared his move to Bulgaria was a bad idea from the moment he landed.

His instincts were bang on as he endured a lonely and unsatisfying time playing for second tier side Pirin Blagoevgrad.

The Englishman is delighted to be back ‘home’ in Scottish football with K i l ma r nock aft e r prev ious spell s at Inverness and Hamilton.

Tempted to Bulgaria after leaving Accies at the end of last season, Oakley confessed: “I’ll be honest – it was very hard. I don’t regret going out there and trying it but, generally, everything was wrong.

“I found it hard to settle. Pretty much from the minute I arrived there I thought, ‘I’m not sure.’

“It was a very lonely period for me. I felt it was going to be a great opportunity but I can put it down to experience.

“That’s football. I gave it

KILLER MOVE

George a go. That’s what you’ve got to do sometimes.

“I learned that I didn’t fit in and I didn’t like it so I was delighted to come back after just six months.”

Oakley failed to score in 11 games for Pirin, who are coached by ex- Dundee United midfielder Warren Feeney. Hamilton boss Brian Rice tried to resign the 25-year-old but Killie were Oakley’s pick.

Outgoing boss Alex Dyer’s last bit of business was to sign the striker until the end of the season and he made a debut against Livingston in midweek.

Oakley said: “I had a fantastic time at Hamilton and I get on really well with Brian Rice who is a great manager. But it was hard to turn down the chance to have a fresh start, especially at such a big club.

“I like new adventures. I’ve tried to play football in different countries but feel at home in Scotland.

“I know the quality of the players here and I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into the job. I just want a run of games because I’m looking to start scoring.”
