- ■ David McCarthy

Kilmarnock last night sacked beleaguered boss Alex Dyer after the Ayrshire outfit blew a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to St Johnstone at Rugby Park. Killie slumped to ninth in the Premiership after their third straight defeat and chairman Billy Bowie insisted the decision was made in a bid to preserve the club’s top-flight status.

Dyer, who had been assistant manager as Killie finished third in 2018/19, took over when boss

Steve Clarke was appointed Scotland head coach but the 55-year-old Londoner had been unable to build on the success they’d had as a partnership.

And after watching yesterday’s capitulation, Bowie and his Rugby Park board moved quickly.

Bowie said: “This was a tough decision for the club and not one which was made lightly.

“However, in light of recent results and in the interest of preserving our Premiership status, we feel this is the correct time for a change.

“Alex is a great man who I have the utmost respect for and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Rugby Park.

“I want to thank Alex for his important contribution to some truly wonderful days here at Kilmarnock and I wish him every success in the future.”

A Killie statement went on to pay tribute to Dyer, who has officially left by mutual consent.

It read: “We are grateful to Alex for all he has achieved with the club since joining Killie in October 2017.”

Meanwhi le, Cal lum Davidson hailed his super Saints for battling back from the brink to leapfrog Kil lie and take their unbeaten run to four.

The Perth boss said: “I thought the players were brilliant second half – their attitude, the way they got on the ball and got into spaces to hurt Kilmarnock, and when the chances came we took them.

“Some of them were scrappy goals but I will take that.

“I think we can make the top six if we can carry on our form of this month.

“I’m still more concerned with getting the points to ensure we stay in this league and then we can move forward from there.”
