Police slam covidiot fans after thousands defy lockdown rules

Rangers supporters start title party early

- ■ Derek Alexander

Rangers fans were condemned by police and the Scottish Government yesterday after thousands gathered outside Ibrox before the club took another step towards clinching the league title.

Supporters mobbed manager Steven Gerrard’s car as he made his way to the stadium hours before kick- off. Large crowds let off flares and fireworks as the players drove to a nearby car park before taking on St Mirren.

A Holyrood spokesperson hit out at the fans for breaching Covid-19 lockdown rules and “jeopardising the safety of police officers and supporters”.

But Gerrard defended the fans. He told Sky Sports: “I’ve got to let the players enjoy this. It’s been a journey of ups and downs. I’ve only been part of it for three years but for the past 10 years these fans, ex-players and staff have been through everything. It’s only normal that people want to enjoy themselves.

“The priority is that people stay safe and respect the guidelines and rules. But there’s another side where you have to realise what these people have been through. I’m absolutely delighted to be in this position. Now we’ve got to go and finish the job off.”

Scottish Government guidance states people should stay at home unless they have to travel for essential reasons.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene and one officer was filmed losing his footing as he helped usher Gerrard’s car safely through the crowd.

A Holyrood spokesperson said: “We are extremely disappointed supporters have gathered at Ibrox today.

“At this crucial stage of suppressing the virus, the actions of this minority of individuals jeopardises the safety of other supporters, the police on duty and the wider community.

“We will continue to engage with Police Scotland and the club.”

The Light Blues won the match 3- 0. They could be crowned Scottish Premier League champions today if Celtic fail to beat Dundee United.

Scottish Police Federation chairman David Hamilton said the scenes were really disappointing”. Headded: “They are putting the public and officers at risk. Most of those attending will have been unvaccinated.”

Chief Super intendent Mark Sutherland said: “At about 10am a large number of supporters gathered outside Ibrox Stadium and pyrotechnic devices were set off. I would remind supporters that, in line with Scottish Government coronavirus guidelines, all gatherings are prohibited. Officers engaged with those present to explain and encourage compliance with restrictions.”

A Scottish Tory spokesman said: “It’s vital that everyone follows Covid-19 rules. We will only keep the virus under control and get out of lockdown by following public health guidance.”

Fans were still cheering their heroes outside the gates of Ibrox at the final whistle. Rangers declined to comment.
