Players’ handlers pitch in to ditch girls

Footballer Peter Crouch has revealed how player liaison officers “do anything” for pampered players – even dumping girlfriends for them.

The 40-year- old former Spurs and Liverpool ace said that the liaison officers were vital to sorting out ever y l it t le thing for mollycoddled players.

On his podcast with BBC sports reporter Tom Fordyce and DJ Chris Stark, Crouch said there were loads of “stupid things” that “only a footballer” would ask for help with.

The daft things players have asked for assistance with included a pet goldfish “swimming the wrong way round” and getting someone to open their post for them.

One player even sat in the freezing cold for two months after his heating broke down – and it wasn’t until the liaison officer got involved that it got fixed.

But the most amazing revelation was that the player liaison officers would be expected to help a player dump a girlfriend if they “got too clingy”.

Dad-of-four Crouch, who is married to model Abbey Clancy, said:“Everything is geared up so you play well on a Saturday and, if there are any distractions or problems, clubs will try to take those problems away for you.

“Ultimately your goal is to go there and play well so, if there is anything off the pitch that is diff icult for you i.e. splitting up with a girl friend, I think that comes into the category.”

My granny Bella Cameron. I was brought up from the Blitz in London and was parked on her knee. She ran a menage on Glasgow’s London Road and always looked in on another woman who lived in the close by herself with a cup of tea or bowl of soup. One day she went in and found her dead in her chair. She ensured she had a decent burial instead of a pauper’s grave. I was 12 at the time and the decency of that really struck me, properly socialist.
