Super Steve is getting better older he gets

- Fraser Mackie

Ian Durrant insists veteran Steven Davis is playing the best football of his career at the age of 36.

And his contribution to Rangers will be crucial as they go deep into Europa League competition.

Ibrox hero Durrant has been awestruck by the Northern I r ishman’s controlled performances in midfield this season.

Davis will make his 48th outing for club and country since the beginning of August when he lines up against Slavia Prague in midweek.

But Durrant reckons the Ibrox star is getting better with age. He said: “Steven is defying logic with the way he’s playing.

“I know that when you go into the later stages of your career there’s a bit where energy levels drop and you don’t get about the park as much.

“But he’s so controlled upstairs. His brain is moving far faster than most of the players he’s playing with.

“He’s seeing victories out for the team. He knows exactly when to turn the gas up and when to put it back down again.

“He looks in absolute controll of everything he’s doing. He’s a lwayy s bbee en a fantastictic player but, right now,ow, looks the all-roundund complete midfielder.” der.”

Withh no hint that hat powers rs are on n th e w a ne , Durrant is s eager for or

Davis to remain at Ibrox for another season.

Yet two years ago this weekend signs weren’t good for him enjoying a successful second spell at Rangers.

Davis was left out the squad for a Scottish Cup tie in Aberdeen.

Long- term injury and only two starts in six months for Southampton left Davis playing catch-up to help Rangers’ pursuit of elusive silverware.

Durrant said: “Because of the incredibly high levels he’d set, people expected that button to be switched on again.

“But after missing lots of football, it takes time. It’s hard work. So never judge people too early.

“Let them get their fitness and see how they are.

“He’s certainly making up for it now and deserves all the rewards for what he has put in. Hopefully he’ll sign another deal.

“The Rangers central defenders must love it knowing he’s in front, the way he goe s about screening the ball.

“And what an education for Ryan Jack, who’s not a bad player himself, to have these yearsy playing beside himhim.

“Those ttwo look the per fect foif l in the middle of ththe park.

“I se e pl ayer s a arou round Dav i s feeding fee off the way w he plays. His H mannerisms, is how he c onducts himself. h He is such s a dream to t work with.”
