We’d no answer to Gers

- ■ Scott McDermott

Jim Goodwin admits St Mirren couldn’t live with red-hot Rangers at Ibrox.

The Buddies gaf fer refused to criticise his team after their defeat to the champions-elect.

Goals from Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi sealed the win for Steven Gerrard’s men, who are now just a point from the Premiership title.

Goodwin believes Gers are worthy champs.

The Saints boss said: “Rangers were excellent. We couldn’t handle their rotation in forward areas.

“They seemed to have time and space. It wasn’t a lack of effort from us – sometimes you have to say the other team were better.

“We’d hoped they would have an off day but we knew they wouldn’t with what was at stake.

“Rangers deserve all the pats on the back they’ve had.” Goodwin’s team had to walk through hundreds of Rangers supporters who’d gathered outside Ibrox before kick-off.

Even though they were breaching Cov id- 19 regulations, the Saints boss had no complaints about their behaviour.

He said: “It didn’t have any impact on us. Yes, they shouldn’t be there but can you blame them?

“It was all in good humour, no mal ice. I walked through about 100 of them and it was fine.

“They generated a good atmosphere and Rangers didn’t let them down.”

One positive for Saints was a late debut for 16-year- old Dylan Reid, who became Premiership’s youngest ever player.

He said: “I was delighted to give Dylan a chance. He’s still a baby physically but technically very good.

“We’re just delighted that he’s one of ours and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop in years to come.”
