Getting a Phil of bad luck

-

Phil Jagielka netted an own goal to help Leeds to a 2-1 Yorkshire derby win and send Sheffield United to their 24th league defeat of the season.

The veteran defender turned the ball past keeper Aaron Ramsdale early in the second half after Ben Osborn had cancelled out Jack Harrison’s early opener for Leeds.

The Blades, cast adrift at the foot of the table, bat t l ed admi rably throughout and were not without their chances.

But Leeds created plenty more as they passed the 40-point mark with their 13th league win of their first season back in the Premier League, which lifted them back into the top half of the table.

Leeds goal scorer Harrison said: “Overall we will be happy to get the three points.

“We could have improved in some areas. It was a good performance, not only from myself but all around.

“The team played well, quite solid, and we didn’t really concede a lot. We created plenty and that’s what we wanted to do.”

On a tough run of f ixtures coming up against Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United, Harrison added: “We will be looking to do it again going into a tough month.

“It’s not something we’re not capable of doing. Everybody is up for it. We can be happy with how the season has gone so far.”

On Jagielka’s own goal, Sheffield United caretaker Paul Heckingbottom said: “You have to try and get something on it.

“It’s probably a goal from the striker so you have to commit to that as a defender.”
