■ Newcomer Jaycee Hillsman says Glasgow Rocks’ unusual situation of employing a playercoach can be a blessing for him.

Sheffield Sharks visit in the BBL Cup today, with Friday’s victory at Newcastle giving Gareth Murray a boost after his debut season at the helm saw them prop up the league.

American forward Hillsman, a summer arrival, said: “It is a first for me but Gareth is a great guy.

“He’s able to connect with us in a different way than some coaches would. I love that. He’s been through the grind and played professionally for 17 years. There’s nothing I can do but learn from him.”

■ Malcolm Cameron says his new-look Glasgow Clan team is “ticking all the boxes” – even if it looks nothing like his usual ones.

Clan return in November after delaying their Elite Ice Hockey League start but coach Cameron already has his roster completed.

The Canadian said: “We have speed, experience, youth, we’re aggressive and tough.

“This is a different team to what I’ve worked with. It’s not a typical Malcolm Cameron team. Usually I would have 50 per cent skill and 50 per cent what I call sandpaper – a hard-working player.

“With coming in late, a lot of the typical skilled players were off the market. That’s not to say we don’t have skill in our ranks. We certainly do in these guys but they also bring a gritty side to the game as well.”

■ Italy’s Elisa Balsamo sprinted to the road race title at the world championships in Belgium ahead of three- time champion Marianne Vos. Lizzie Deignan was the first Brit to cross in 14th.
