Kid Doig is scout of world

- Gordon Parks

Ray McKinnon has revealed a random scouting mission helped send Hibs kid Josh Doig’s career heading towards the stars.

The former Tannadice boss went on a talent spotting trip for Queen’s Park when he watched his old side’s reserves.

And he found a gem in the shape of the kid playing for the Hibees against United that day.

McKinnon made a move to land Doig on loan and it was the lift off for the 19-year-old’s career, with Watford and Burnley targeting him in the last transfer window.

Ray said: “It was a lovely day in Dundee so I went along to watch Dundee United’s reserves play Hibs at Broughty Juniors on their plastic pitch.

“I was looking for a leftback for Queen’s Park at the time and the kid playing at the heart of

DOIG rising Hibs star the Hibs defence caught my eye. I found out he had been playing for the Scotland Schoolboys as a wing-back.

“I had a chat after the game and managed to get him to come to Queen’s on loan. He was outstanding and his career hasn’t looked back since.”

Scotland are blessed with an abundance of talent at left-back with Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney starring in England’s top flight at Liverpool and Arsenal.

Champions League winner Robertson also turned out for the Spiders before his rapid rise to fame with Dundee United, Hull and Liverpool.

McKinnon wouldn’t be too surprised if Doig’s journey also took him to the top down south.

He said: “I put my neck on the line in an interview when I said he could have the same type of career trajectory as Robertson and Tierney.

“He’s a great kid and has similar athletic attributes to that pair so the sky is the limit.”
