Actor Role means more than starring in West End

-

The actor playing Tommy said his family are more delighted he’s playing this part than a prized role in a show in London’s West End.

“This is my equivalent,” said Celtic fan Liam Harkins. “This means more to my family, and me, than playing Hamlet at the Old Vic.

“When I met his wife Rosemary, she said to me, ‘You must be Thomas, then.’ It was so nice and really put me at ease.”

London-trained Liam’s earliest memories were of Wim Jansen’s triumphant team. He has enjoyed learning about club legend Tommy, meeting his family, watching documentaries and reading his biography, Twists And Turns.

Much of the play is set off the field, with lots of the action taking place in the family home, the chapel and the doctor’s consultation room.

But there are moments which will stir the memories and emotions of many Hoops fans.

The play features his post-match interview with Jim Whyte after the 1988 Scottish Cup Final, perhaps the quintessential essence of Tommy.

The pre-match talk with the likes of old pals Pat Bonner and Paul McStay before the 1995 Cup Final, ending their six-year trophy drought, also features, as does his bond with Walter Smith.

The context is one of family, faith and football – and, among the cheers and tears, there’s music too.

Playwright David, whose previous works include the acclaimed story of world champion Gorbals boxer Benny Lynch, said: “It’s the life story of an amazing man.

“We want to make people laugh, cry, give them a sing-song and send them up the road happy.”
