City sitting pretty as they slam sweet 7 in Strathspey rout Sandison can see the upside as Vale make point at last

Brechin City are second in the title race after crushing Strathspey Thistle 7-3.

Last season’s relegated SPFL side cut Fraserburg­h’s lead at the summit to nine points, with Andy Kirk’s team also holding a game in hand.

The 7-3 triumph over the feisty Grantown- on- Spey visitors came despite Brechin falling behind at 2- 0 and 3-2.

But the comeback hoisted Kirk’s men into second place on goal difference.

Kirk said: “Strathspey caused us problems in the first half, with some moments we should have dealt with better.

“But it was an important three points and great effort to see the job through and score the goals they did.”

Keiran Chalmers evaded a couple of tackles inside the Brechin box to slide in the third-minute opener. Thistle player- coach Kris Duncan made it 2- 0 to Thistle.

Hamish Thomson and a David Cox header made it 2-2 before Duncan bundled home from close range to put the visitors back in front.

New Vale of Leithen boss Grant Sandison believes his players can dodge the drop after picking up their first point of the season.

Michael Robertson’s header got the league’s basement boys a 1-1 draw with Gretna.

Sandison said: “It gives us something to build on for the weeks ahead. We are getting fitter and the new players who have come in are helping us.

“We should have one or two more in this week and we’re not down yet.”

Kieran McGachie’s second half double and a late strike from Kieran Hall gave leaders Bonnyrigg Rose a 3-0 win over Civil Service Strollers.

Rangers B maintained their challenge after Tony Weston’s second- half penalty gave them a 1- 0 win over Berwick.

A late Matty Burrows’ own goal gifted Broomhill the points at Forthbank with a dramatic 3-2 win.

Stirling University had come from behind to lead through goals by Jamie Penker and Conor Doan.

In the Highland League Cup, Deveronval­e and Lossiemout­h tied 1-1, with Vale’s James Connelly sent off for a kick at Brodie Allen. Vale won 4-3 on penalties.
