We want cup for new boss

-

Sports Cup semi- f inal against Hibs at Hampden.

So the new gaffer’s only communication with the captain has been via sporting director Ross Wilson.

But after three years under Steven Gerrard without a domestic cup win, Tavernier wants to deliver for the former Feyenoord coach who was hired on Thursday.

The Rangers full-back admits their cup record under Gerrard wasn’t good enough.

And with B team bosses David McCal lum and Brian Gilmour in the dug- out today, he’s determined to seal a slot in the final.

Graeme Murty, though, has lef t Ibrox af ter Range r s ye s t erd ay confirmed the departure of their former caretaker boss, who had been their Head of Elite Academy Development.

Tavernier insisted: “We are always striving to be better. We know that domestically in the cups, we’ve not been there. We want to build on what we achieved last season, in winning the league.

“We want to take it into this season and have a real go at it. We obviously want to reach the final.

“Rangers are built on winning trophies. We’re fully focused on the job in hand on Sunday. y

“The new gaffer didn’t want to disrupt the team so close to going into a semi-final.

“I’m seeing him on Monday morning so I wiwill l have a good chat with h im then.

All

the boys are looking forward to working with him. This is a new chapter for us.

“Everything so far has been through dialogue with Ross. I’ll speak to him on Monday.”

Tavernier bel ieves Gerrard’s departure to Aston Vi l la and van Bronckhorst’s arrival won’t mean upheaval.

Unlike when previous ga f fers have gone, Tavernier knows the titlewinning boss left behind a top-class squad.

He said: “I thought Ross and the club handled it really smoothly.

“But the squad we have now is one of the strongest I’ve ever played in. I’ve got great belief in it.

“The new gaf fer is taking over a great squad and that’s the reason why I see it being a seamless transition.”

Rangers have had to rely on McCa l lum, Gilmour and Jermain Defoe this week to set them up for the semi.

But Taverni e r is adamantada that the system andan st y le Ger ra rd implementedim won’t changecha too much.

HeH said: “Training has beenbee really positive and sharp.sha David, Brian and JD haveh stepped in and it’s beenbee really good.

“I don’t think much changescha at all for Sunday. TheTh way we play filters downdow to the B team.

“David and Brian have comecom in and it’s been seamlessse because of the wayw their B team plays.”

Rangers confirmed MurtyM has left the club afteraf five years at Ibrox.

In a statement, the clubclu said: “We thank GraemeGra for outstanding serviceser throughout his ffivive years at the club, i ncludinc ng when he steppedste up to take on first-firsteam responsibilities at the request of the RangersRan board.”
