We must strike the match

- Scott McDermott

Jim Goodwin felt St Mirren matched Hearts in every department – apart from putting the ball in the net.

The Buddies boss cut a frustrated figure after a Tynecastle defeat that leaves them without a win in six Premiership games.

Saints finished with 10 men af ter captain Joe Shaughnessy was sent off in injury time.

And after having a goal ruled out for offside, losing Scott Tanser to injury and suffering another loss – Goodwin was left to rue his team’s luck.

He said: “The frustration for me is that at 0- 0 we’re the better team.

“I’m not saying we were miles better but we were on top for the first 45 minutes.

“We pressed aggressively, played some good football and probably had the better opportunities. Craig Gordon

made two or three saves that kept Hearts in the game.

“Those key moments in matches are really coming back to bite us.

“The manner of how we conceded hurts me. It was a stupid ball across the pitch that gets cut out and a deflected cross fell kindly for Gary Mackay-Steven.

“We’re not getting those gifts at the moment.

“The disallowed goal looks very tight. If the assistant has got it right it’s a hell of a call.

“I’m also disappointed with the red card.

“Joe was the last man and there was a bit of grappling on the edge of the box.

“But with Hearts 2- 0 up and the game done, I don’t think anybody would have minded if the referee had turned a blind eye.

“It’s a big call for us because we are already missing Conor McCarthy at the back.

“Ultimately, you have to put the ball in the net and we haven’t done it.

“We have to get back to winning ways – and soon.”
