Magical Eriksen continues fairytale by sinking Euro kings

-

Just when you think the Christian Eriksen fairytale can’t get any more magical he goes and writes another enthralling chapter.

Fresh from scoring on his return to Denmark’s Parken Stadium – scene of his near- fatal heart attack at Euro 2020 – the playmaker inspired a stunning victory over European champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Eriksen scored Brentford’s second as they mounted a quite incredible second-half comeback, having fal len behind to a rocket shot from Antonio Rudiger.

Vitaly Janelt grabbed a double, with Yoane Wissa putt ing the seal on a landmark victory – but the spotlight was stolen once more by Er iksen as he grabbed his first Bees goal.

The 30-year- old’s career hung in the balance at the start of the season when Inter Milan had to release him as players with heart problems can’t perform in Serie A.

But Brentford offered the former Spurs star a route back into English football and he’s now flourishing under countryman Thomas Frank.

The Bees boss said: “Every team has 11 players but sometimes you need key players to lift the rest by both playing well and their personality – and Christian does that. I’m pleased he is playing for us.”

This could be the victory that effectively secures safety for Brentford as it takes them 11 points clear of the Premier League drop zone.

The Bees announced their arrival in the top f light by battering Arsenal on the opening day and this triumph was every bit as sweet.

Asked if it was their best day of the season, Frank said: “It’s tricky. Top two I’d say. The first game against Arsenal was also big.

“I’m not sure how many times a promoted club has gone to the ground of a top three or four club and then won. It can’t be many.

“So we have to enjoy this moment, appreciate it and then move on.”

The thumping defeat was a huge real ity check for Chelsea after a run of six successive wins amidst all their off-field turmoil.

They must now try to pick themselves up for a crunch Champions League quarterfinal with Real Madrid.

Boss Thomas Tuchel said: “Nobody saw it coming, especially after going 1- 0 ahead. It was very untypical.

“But we stopped defending. We were not aware of enough of danger and were sloppy.”
