Posting on social media, she said: “[It has been] 46 years since we last seen you Sandy – living without you has been tough.

“We all want you home, not knowing where you are is a living nightmare. I try every day to try to f ind memories of you in my head but I’ve none and that breaks my heart. Love you forever our blue-eyed boy.”

Sympathy poured in for Donna following her post.

Allan Bryant, who is still looking for his son Allan Jr af ter he was repor ted missing from Glenrothes in November 2013, said: “Thinking of you, Donna.”

Donna has worked tirelessly to find Sandy for decades. Last year she returned to the house where she and her big brother had been playing on the day he vanished, retracing her steps in the hope it might jog someone’s memory.

In January she appeared on Amazon Music podcast The Missing to share the story with a global audience.
