Tottenham lost ground in the Champions League chase as they were blunted by Brentford in a 0- 0 draw.

Christian Eriksen faced his former club, who were left frustrated by a stubborn Bees defence that has now sealed their top-flight spot.

Spurs failed to muster a single shot on target for the second game in a row as boss Antonio Conte lamented a frustrating 90 minutes.

The Italian said: “It was a tough game but if you can’t win then the least you can do is take a point. We’re still in the race right now.”

Eriksen was up against Tottenham for the first time after seven years at the club.

He said: “There were a little extra nerves today but I felt very free. The players and the coach are doing an incredible job at Brentford.”

Newcastle as Eddie Howe’s men battered them 3- 0.

The Magpies took the lead in 35 minutes when Jacob Murphy found space down the right wing and picked out Allan Saint-Maximin on the edge of the box.

The Frenchman’s lay- off was overhit but found its way to Joelinton, who produced a thumping finish into the top corner.

Just five minutes later the lead was doubled when Grant Hanley tackled Murphy only to see the ball ricochet across the box to Joelinton, who rolled it into an open net.

Dutch keeper Tim Krul then gifted his former team the third when he tried to find Kenny McLean with a pass but Bruno Guimaraes intercepted before dinking the ball over the goalie.

Elsewhere, there was nothing to separate Leicester and Aston Villa in the battle of the former Old Firm bosses.

Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes and Steven Gerrard’s Villans huffed and puffed but neither side found a breakthrough in a dull 0- 0 draw.
