Looking Rosey in final bid

-

Bonnyrigg Rose have one foot in the pyramid play-off final after a convincing victory at home to Highland League winners Fraserburgh.

The winners will battle it out with Cowdenbeath, who finished bottom of League Two, in a two-leg play-off.

And Rose are on track to join the likes of Edinburgh City, Cove Rangers and Kelty Hearts in winning promotion to the SPFL.

But boss Robbie Horn said: “The tie is far from over, that is for sure.”

“I was delighted our players stood up to the task today.”

In front of a crowd of 1571 at a bustling New Dundas Park, neither side were able to create many clear cut chances during the opening stages.

But Bonnyrigg grabbed the opener on 38 minutes.

Rose str iker Kieran McGachie rose highest to meet Lee Currie’s free-kick and thump a header into the top corner past Broch keeper Paul Leask.

Scorer turned provider nine minutes into the second half when McGachie knocked the ball down into the path of Callum Connolly.

The midfielder volleyed home from the edge of the area to double Bonnyrigg’s lead and get the home crowd dreaming of an historic foray into Scotland’s senior game.

Bonnyrigg were not going to have it all their own way though, as Fraserburgh halved the deficit with 70 minutes on the clock.

Ross Aitken crossed for Paul Young to head home from three yards out.

While getting the goal gave the Broch a new lease of life, that wa s qu i c k ly extinguished as Rose restored their two-goal cushion nine minutes from time.

Bonnyrigg’s Dean Brett was fouled by Sean Butcher 22 yards from goal.

And Currie duly popped the resulting free-kick into the top right-hand corner.

That gave Horn’s side a huge advantage ahead of their eagerly awaited trip north next weekend.
