Deal is all up to Gordon

- Andy Newport

Hibs caretaker David Gray says he’ll leave it to Ron Gordon to decide if he’s management material.

The 2016 Scottish Cup hero was back in command of the team for the second time this season after Shaun Maloney’s shock sacking last week.

A first stint for Gray, 33, saw him register a win, a draw and a defeat – against Celtic in the League Cup Final – as he stepped in to the void left by Jack Ross.

But he managed to bag a win that lifted the gloom that’s lingered over Leith since back-to-back defeats to Hearts cost Maloney his job after just 120 days – and the club a top-six place

Ewan Henderson’s second-half winner had the fans singing Gray’s name but the ex-skipper is refusing to throw his hat into the ring just yet.

He said: “That decision

Gray has nothing to do with me. This is all about a job I’ve been asked to do from now until the end of the season.

“We need to get as many points as we can. It’s been a good start today and now our attention switches to Livingston.

“My future is irrelevant at the moment.”

The win means a threat of relegation hanging over the club has all-but been removed, with second bottom St Johnstone now 10 points behind.

But Gray said: “Until it’s mathematically safe, we’d never say we’re completely out of danger. But that was never the message going into the game, our message was that we need to finish the season as best we can.

“We need to use all of the disappointment of failing to achieve what we set out to, which was fourth place and European football.

“No one’s denied that and I have to say the reaction has been fantastic. The performance and attitude today showed that.”
