DANIIL: I GOOGLED MY NO.1 STATUS

-

Daniil Medvedev revealed he Googled shortest time as world No.1 when his first reign at the top lasted just a fortnight.

Now the 26-year-old is itching to get back there after Novak Djokovic reclaimed his place at the tennis summit.

Wimbledon being stripped of ranking points means the Russian is in with a chance of climbing back above Djokovic.

That’s despite Medvedev – who raced into the French Open last 16 yesterday 6-2 6- 4 6-2 against

Serb Miomir Kecmanovic – being banned from playing at SW19.

He said: “I went on the internet and looked just like this on Google – ‘ Who were the shortest No.1 players in the world?’

“The first I saw was Pat Rafter being there for one week and he’s an absolute legend. And Carlos Moya was somewhere there.

“I didn’t know these stats and if somebody asked me, ‘How long were Rafter and Moya No.1?’ I’d say, ‘I don’t know, six months, one year?’ So it’s something nobody can take away from me.

“Not that many players could take it while they play tennis.

“It’s a great motivation to try to come back there.”

Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas thrashed Swede Mikael Ymer 6-2 6-2 6-1.

■ Archie Goodburn believes a homecoming to Edinburgh can unlock his full potential and propel him to prominence in the pool at the Commonwealths. The 20-year-old won the 100metres breaststroke at the Glasgow International Meeting last night.

Having taken the tough call to quit Loughborough last summer, he said: “It was a change I probably needed just to reset. I’m a different swimmer in the pool.” ■ Top Scot David Law tees up on the final day of the Dutch Open five shots off joint leaders Matt Wallace and Victor Perez.

Law carded a four-under 68 to reach tied 13th on five under.
