Double trouble for Fran

- Alison McConnell

Fran Alonso has urged his Celtic stars to make it a double today and leave Glasgow City potless.

The Hoops take on City in the Scottish Women’s Cup Final at Tynecastle, having already won the League Cup.

They beat Eileen Gleeson’s side in that final while City’s stranglehold on the league was loosened as rampant Rangers took title glory.

Celtic boss Alonso said: “So much is about belief.

“It would be incredible for us to win the two domestic cups in one season.

“The psychology around the game is key. We have already beaten Glasgow City in a final this season when we won the League Cup.

“That is what we have reminded the girls of. They must be composed, confident and brave on the ball.

“When you play Glasgow City, you know what you are coming up against – they are a team of winners.

“They have a winning mentality that has been fostered over many years within a club accustomed to being successful. But we

have winners of our own. We know the direction we want to go as a club and as a team.

“We’re very confident in our ability to do that. We are a hungry team. We are desperate for more success.”

City have beaten Celtic twice in the league since the turn of the year.

But Alonso prefers to dwell on his side’s success in the last showpiece.

He said: “We know we can do it and the players know we can do it because we have done it already.

“We are excited for it. It is a great challenge for us and we are all ready to embrace that pressure rather than be afraid of it.

“There is a particular pressure on Glasgow City because they have won a trophy of some sort every season for the past 17 or 18 years. And when you look at the league, Rangers’ budget is way higher than City’s yet they ran them to the line.

“So we know what a quality team they are and we will respect them.

“But we know we also have quality within our side.”
