MAN, 55, KILLED AS FIRE RIPS THROUGH HIS HOME

Neighbours use ladder in desperate bid to rescue pal

A MAN has died in a house fire despite desperate attempts to rescue him, it was revealed yesterday.

Neighbours put a ladder against a back bedroom window in a bid to save Barry Toal, 55, but their efforts were in vain.

A NIFRS spokesman confirmed 30 fire personnel attended the blaze in the Culdee Drive area of Armagh city and five appliances were tasked on Friday night.

He said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call to a fire in a midterrace­d property.

“Appliances from Armagh Fire Station arrived first at the scene and were quickly supported by crews from, Keady and Portadown. A command support unit from Lisburn Fire Station also attended.

DAMAGE

“Fire crews commenced firefighti­ng operations on the fire on the first floor and roof space which had caused extensive fire and smoke damage to the property.

“Firefighte­rs wearing breathing apparatus and using jets were able to bring the fire under control quickly and prevent it spreading to adjoining properties.

“Unfortunat­ely they discovered a person had lost their life in the incident.
