Neighbours use ladder in desperate bid to rescue pal
A MAN has died in a house fire despite desperate attempts to rescue him, it was revealed yesterday.
Neighbours put a ladder against a back bedroom window in a bid to save Barry Toal, 55, but their efforts were in vain.
A NIFRS spokesman confirmed 30 fire personnel attended the blaze in the Culdee Drive area of Armagh city and five appliances were tasked on Friday night.
He said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call to a fire in a midterraced property.
“Appliances from Armagh Fire Station arrived first at the scene and were quickly supported by crews from, Keady and Portadown. A command support unit from Lisburn Fire Station also attended.
DAMAGE
“Fire crews commenced firefighting operations on the fire on the first floor and roof space which had caused extensive fire and smoke damage to the property.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using jets were able to bring the fire under control quickly and prevent it spreading to adjoining properties.
“Unfortunately they discovered a person had lost their life in the incident.
