Breakfast prices rocket by 12%

- BY STEPHEN HAYWARD Consumer Correspondent

MILLIONS of families are forking out more for breakfast as cereal prices soar.

Rising wheat costs have sent a 24-pack of Weetabix to £2.39 at Asda and Morrisons – a seven per cent hike.

A 600g pack of Weetabix Minis Bananas is up 12 per cent on average to £2.50.

Stablemate Alpen is up 17 per cent on average in Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose. And Nestle’s Shredded Wheat Biscuits are also more expensive with a 360g box now £1.65 on average, up seven per cent.

But research by analysts Brand View shows that overall average cereal prices rose just one per cent.

Weetabix had warned it might have to lift prices because of rising wheat costs since the Brexit vote.

Kellogg’s said it has “not made any list price increases in the last six months”.

Nestle said it would only make cost price increases when “absolutely necessary”.
