‘GREAT IRELAND’ HEROINE KATIE

- BY PAUL NICHOLL DOWN BUT NOT OUT: Milena Koleva falls in round seven last night

KATIE TAYLOR continued the perfect start to her professional career with a unanimous decision win over Bulgaria’s Milena Koleva at the Manchester Arena last night.

The former world-title challenger posed the toughest test of Taylor’s pro career so far, but the Bray native proved a class apart in her fourth fight with the only hitch coming from the fight announcer who hailed the winner as a native of “Great Ireland”.

The 30-year-old former Olympic Gold medallist was looking for the finish and knocked her opponent to the canvas in the seventh round but Koleva showed determination to make it to the end, where the judges scored the bout 80-72 to the Taylor.

Speaking after the bout, Taylor, who may fight again on the Anthony Joshua Vladamir Klitschko undercard next month, said: “I definitely needed eight rounds, we are trying to progress quickly so hopefully 10 rounds comes next. It was a great contest against a strong opponent who gave it everything.

“Hopefully I will have two or three fights then fight for a world title. It is great to be boxing again on such a big bill, it’s an honour to be here.”
