AA win battle of the breakdowns

- BY STEPHEN HAYWARD Consumer Correspondent

AA patrols have been voted Britain’s best roadside repair service.

In a survey of the five biggest breakdown firms, the AA pushed main rival the RAC into fourth place.

The smaller and cheaper GEM Motoring Assist was second after topping the same poll for three years.

The annual survey of 50,000 drivers for Auto Express rates breakdown firms on speed, success rates and overall knowledge and friendliness.

Third place went to Britannia Rescue, while Green Flag finished bottom after being criticised for being too slow and unfriendly.

Over a quarter of drivers only had cover because it came free with the car.

Flat batteries and tyres were the most common problems. One per cent were due to putting the wrong fuel in.
