THERESA May was planning a month ago to call a snap election and it was not the sudden decision she pretends, claims Mr Corbyn.

The PM said her mind was made up during a holiday in Wales before Easter.

But Mr Corbyn claims he got wind of her plans weeks before that. He says: “She said there wasn’t going to be an election with enormous sincerity.

“But I understood the Conservative Party was preparing for an election so I was always aware there might be one. I did find it slightly odd that she was walking through Snowdonia and a shaft of sunshine comes through the clouded sky and, eureka, we’re having an election.

“I never get the same feeling when I’m running through Finsbury Park!”

Backbench Tory Alec Shelbrooke says he also saw evidence last month that an election was in the offing in a Commons timetable sent out by party whips.

He claims it made time available for an emergency debate last week. The Elmet and Rothwell MP adds: “I thought, ‘Why would they be planning an emergency statement so far in advance?’

“And then it was obvious to me the only thing they could be planning for was an election.”

Sources say Mrs May had hoped to hold the poll on May 4, the same day as local elections.

But the timing was thrown off by the terror attack on Parliament last month.
