What’s it worth?
QMy father bought this instrument in Catford, South East London, for the princely sum of 1/9d – a tad under 9p in today’s money – in the 1940s. It is in a black case with blue lining bearing the name Carpenter & Westley, London. It comprises a sun dial, compass and thermometer. I believe it is over 100 years old and, while I have no intention of selling, I’d like to know its value. John Hill, via email
ACarpenter and Westley made scientific and practical instruments in the
Victorian period. I believe they closed in 1914, so you’re right in your estimation of a date. Some larger pieces, like barometers, can make over £1,000. This is more portable and while I can’t find a similar item to make a direct comparison, my feeling is it could be valued £250-£350. Worth an in-person appraisal to be sure.
QI own a Geri Halliwell/
Ginger Spice doll. She’s in perfect condition, in Geri’s famous Union Jack dress and is boxed too. What’s she worth? Alice Well, Cardiff, Wales
Well, you Wannabe looking at around £50 or so – or maybe £75 if in absolutely top notch condition. Galoob made the dolls in 1997 at the peak of the band’s popularity. And Spice Girls memorabilia is popular. Signed lyrics to Goodbye sold at a charity sale for £5,600. A good signed photo will usually command £150£200. And that dress, famously worn by Geri at the 1997 Brit
Awards, sold for £41,320.
AQI inherited a Buren watch from my mother. Before that it belonged to my grandmother. I think it is 1940ish. It works and I wear it every day. I wonder if you’d give a value?
Vivienne Claxton, Nottingham
It is indeed from the 1940s and is a fine example of a good timepiece passed down through the generations. While elegant and well made, it falls into the highly affordable £50-£75 or so range. Other Buren watches fetch more – like a men’s Military Grand Prix watch, which usually makes a few hundred pounds.
