HEART attack victim James Hewitt has been told he faces up to a MONTH in hospital.

Last week the Sunday Mirror revealed Princess Diana’s former lover was left fighting for life after the coronary was followed by a stroke.

The ex Army officer, 58, needed an emergency op and at one point doctors gave him only a “slim chance” of survival. He has now been released from intensive care but is still receiving treatment.

A family friend said: “James has still got a long way to go. He is getting better but his recovery is slow. “He is expected to be in hospital for another four weeks.”

The pal added: “All the family are willing him to get better but they are worried about his low spirits.”

Hewitt, who had a five-year affair with Diana while she was married to Prince Charles, was taken to hospital three weeks ago after having the heart attack at home in Exeter, Devon. He was initially taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. He was later transferred to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to receive specialist medical care.

Hewitt had been on a waiting list to see an NHS consultant when he fell ill. A relative said: “He was all set for a procedure when he had the attack. It was pretty serious but hopefully it’s all OK now.”

A spokeswoman confirmed that James was still recovering in hospital last night.

Hewitt’s illness came weeks after he finally denied rumours he is Prince Harry’s father, insisting: “No, I’m not.”
