- BY COURTNEY GREATEREX

A HUGE fire broke out in a block of flats yesterday, tearing through the top floor.

More than 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Bethnal Green, East London. Thick smoke was seen billowing out of the building as the roof went up in flames.

One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service after suffering from smoke inhalation. It is not yet known what caused the fire.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers are tackling a flat fire. The whole of a flat on the third floor and roof is also alight. The brigade’s 999 control took nearly 50 calls.”
