BACK on his feet after winning the fight of his life, James Hewitt finally leaves hospital.

Princess Diana’s former lover, 58, was given just a “slim chance” of survival by doctors after suffering a heart attack and stroke.

But following emergency surgery and eight weeks of treatment, he is said to have made a good recovery and is well enough to go home. A source said:

“He’s glad to be out as he has had enough of being in hospital. He is doing much better but still needs to build up his strength. Now he just wants to put this behind him and get on with his life.”

Hewitt was discharged from Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital this week. As he left, wearing shorts and a shirt and tie, he was joined by mum Shirley and another woman, thought to be one of his two sisters. He returned to the home he shares with his mother – a two-bedroom flat in a former country house near Exeter.

The former Army officer, who had a five-year affair with the late Diana while she was married to Prince Charles, fell ill at the start of May.

It is understood he was on a waiting list to see a consultant. A friend said at the time: “He was all set for a procedure when he had a heart attack.

“He had a pre-existing illness, then got seriously ill. Suddenly it got critical and he was rushed to hospital.”

Hewitt’s illness came just weeks after he gave a rare interview to Australian TV in which he finally denied long-standing rumours he is Prince Harry’s father.

He insisted: “No, I’m not.”
