140 buried as landslide hits village

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

AT least 140 people were buried alive by a landslide that caused rocks to crash into homes in a mountain village in China yesterday.

The landslide engulfed a cluster of 62 homes and a hotel in Xinmo in the south west of the country at around 6am.

By last night only two people had been found alive. One was a woman who answered her mobile phone when called by rescue workers.

And a couple with a month-old baby escaped as they had got up to deal with their crying child.

Dad Qiao Dashuai said when they stepped outside “the water flow swept us away instantly”.

The horror was triggered by rain and moved enough earth to fill 3,000 full-size swimming pools.
