Who’s speaking? Phone pest firm boss

- EXCLUSIVE BY STEPHEN HAYWARD Consumer Correspondent

THE boss of a phone pest firm which made 22 million nuisance calls is now advising other companies on data protection laws.

Road Accident Consult was fined £270,000 after hounding the public with unwanted inquiries about personal injury and PPI claims. Watchdogs say director Adam Mangan is trying to wind up the business, based in Basingstoke, Hants, which has not paid the fine imposed by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

But last week he was guest speaker at a data protection conference in central London where he talked about the ICO probe. He admitted its findings were correct but said the penalty imposed “was a bit heavy”.

Road Accident Consult, which also traded as Media Tactics, got phone numbers from websites including payday loan brokers.

Mr Mangan told the ICO, which is still seeking to recover the fine, his firm believed the people it rang up had consented to being contacted.

Conference organisers Amplified Business Content defended the decision to invite Mr Mangan, who was not paid to appear.

A spokesman said: “He was there as a cautionary tale.”

Mr Mangan, 50, did not respond to requests for comment.
