HART: KEEP CHIPPING AWAY FOR MY No.1 SHIRT

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

JOE HART has told England’s goalkeepers to keep chipping away at his hold on the No.1 jersey.

Everton goalie Jordan Pickford impressed when Gareth Southgate recently handed him his Three Lions debut against Germany.

While Stoke’s Jack Butland and Burnley’s Tom Heaton, who missed the get-together through injury, have also staked their claim.

But Hart showed he will not easily give up his claim to a starting berth with a solid display against Brazil.

The West Ham star said: “Being chipped away at by the competition is my role, I’m there to be chipped away at. I was immensely impressed with Jordan – he was brilliant.

“I was pleased for him, too, because I want England to do well.

“You talk about Jordan and Jack, but there are also Tom Heaton, Nick Pope now at Burnley doing fantastic and big Fraser Forster. Everyone is good enough to play for England, so we all have to put in the performances when we can and see what the manager thinks.”

Hart said he was sorry to see the manager who signed him on loan from Manchester City in the summer, Slaven Bilic, leave West Ham, but he remains optimistic for the Hammers after David Moyes took over.

Hart added: “I spoke to Slaven after he left. We thanked each other and wished each other the best.”
