BILLY JOE: I’LL MAKE A MEAL OF GOLOVKIN

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS plans to eat his way into 2018 — then have Gennady Golovkin or Saul Alvarez for dinner.

The WBO World middleweight champion (below) has relaxed his diet for the festive period after getting into tremendous shape ahead of his title defence against David Lemieux in Canada a fortnight ago.

He has been on “kebabs and s*** food” ever since.

But he reckons that eating badly will be about as reckless as it gets, in terms of tonight’s celebrations, before he turns his attention back to work and nine months which could cement his legacy in the fight game.

He said: “I’ll have the odd drink, but, if I ever do go out to a nightclub, I’m back for 12.30am.

“I’m not one of those people — I just love food, I really do. I’ve just been eating whatever I want for the last few days — kebabs and a load of s*** food.

“I don’t like clean food, I hate it, and in camp my trainer Dom [Dominic Ingle] has me eating fish and veg or veg and fish, and it’s just horrible.

“In the end, you get used to it, but about six to eight weeks into it, you think, ‘Bloody hell, give me something different’.

“When I’m on the Keto Diet, that’s the best. I’m on that for two weeks, it all depends how big I come in, but that means going to Burger King, having all the fatty foods.

“My fight was always the scales because I used to think my talent would get me through the rest.”

Saunders is in a good place now after a careerbest performance against Lemieux — in pole position for a September clash with the winner of the rematch between “Canelo” and GGG, which is scheduled for May 5.

Saunders does not mind which one, although he would prefer Alvarez.

He said: “I’m confident of beating him because I’m southpaw, awkward and, if I want to win by throwing one punch, I will win.”
