WEST HAM UNITED Marko fires Hammers

- BY NEIL MOXLEY

WEST HAM hero Marko Arnautovic ensured the London Stadium was rocking for all the right reasons.

Security had been ramped up following the shameful scenes that marred their defeat to Burnley a fortnight ago. But an early opener from Joao Mario and further first-half strikes from Arnautovic left strugglers Southampton for dead – and lifted West Ham five points clear of the drop zone.

Hammers boss David Moyes said: “Sometimes these things change clubs. The fans had their say. They were terrific today, and

the players did everything they could. There was a lot of pressure on them and they dealt with it tremendously.”

Moyes (right) added: “But we won’t get carried away because it doesn’t get us safe. We would be having a different Press conference if we hadn’t won. And if the stadium stays the way it was today, then we will have a great chance of getting clear.”

Hammers’ skipper Mark Noble added: “I knew the fans would get behind us.

“We have been in tough situations before and I knew they’d turn up and make noise. I could tell from the moment I walked out of the tunnel they were fully behind us.

“Collectively, as a team and a set of fans, we came together today and got what we deserved. There was real pressure on us and we dealt with it brilliantly.”
