Fortnite (version 3.5)

PS4/Xbox One/PC

You can’t complain when a game is free to download and play, without any crucial in-app purchases.

So when Fortnite was launched on next-gen consoles, it’s no surprise it quickly became one of the most popular shoot-em-ups in the world.

The cartoony graphics may seem to be for younger players, but Fortnite needs tactical nous and teamwork beyond most Call of Duty and Battlefield games.

The latest update includes a tactical grenade that instantly builds a defence tower around you. And vending machines dotted around the map let you use resources to purchase top-quality weapons. It can annoy beginners – there is nothing more frustrating than to get the drop on someone who immediately builds a shed and hides inside it.

However, such varied gameplay and complex tactics ensure no two matches are the same. Developers have the potential to create an iconic game to be enjoyed for years to come.
