When a client’s dog dies it is one of the family that has gone, so no wonder other dogs in the house take it badly.

Some dogs cope better than others. I tell clients it is very important other pets in the house see the departed dog rather than – in their eyes – the dog just vanishing. It is also important to give them love and reassurance during this time. In most cases this is sufficient but I have prescribed antidepressants to help some dogs get over this difficult period for the family.
