CLARKE’S FOUND RIGHT FIT

-

FRAZER CLARKE made a name for himself last night when he was crowned Commonwealth Games super-heavyweight champion.

Until then he was best known as Anthony Joshua’s sparring partner, a boxer who had won the Olympic test event but not the real thing.

Not any more. Not having beaten India’s Satish Kumar to gold and led England’s boxers to their biggest-ever Games medal haul. “I do spar with Joshua, but I’m no-one’s sparring partner,” said Clarke (right), one of six English winners and nine medallists in all. “We work with each other to help each other.

“So I hope those people who thought that about me know me now and recognise me. I’m Frazer Clarke, Big Fraze, from a little town, Burton-on-Trent.

“If you don’t know me now, get to know, cos you’re going to be seeing a lot more of me over the next few years.” Clarke’s unanimous points triumph capped a memorable evening for a team that trains alongside world heavyweight champion Joshua in Sheffield.

“This feels like a golden generation,” said coach Lee Pullen, after Pat McCormack, Peter McGrail and Lisa Whiteside beat opponents from Northern Ireland to win welterweight and bantamweight titles respectively.
