BOOZE BAN IS ON CARDS FOR TWICKENHAM

- BY ADAM HATHAWAY

RFU bosses are planning to slap a booze ban on parts of Twickenham — and take a hit in the pocket.

The beers flow from around threeand-a half hours before kick-off, continuing during matches, and the bars are still open after the game has finished.

But in RFU surveys some punters have complained they are constantly disturbed when they are watching the game by fans getting up to get another round in.

The RFU have introduced children’s tickets for the autumn internationals against New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Japan and are considering the need for alcohol-free zones.

It will cost them thousands of pounds, as they reckon half the booze sold is shifted during the game, but they will ride the cost of beer-free areas to keep the kids happy.

Chief executive Steve Brown said: “If we need to segment some of the stadium so it is a more family friendly place, we may.

“I get a lot of feedback from Twickenham regulars and surveys after games.

“On drinking... it’s becoming clear we need to consider doing something quite different.”

Brown also revealed that the hunt for a successor to Eddie Jones (above) has begun, even though Jones’s contract is not up until 2021.

Brown did not rule out making a pitch for Ireland’s Joe Schmidt (inset) or Warren Gatland of Wales, whose deals expire after the 2019 World Cup.

The RFU chief added: “Nobody is off limits.”
