JIM MAKES IT ULSTER DERBY TREBLE

FOR the third year in succession Jim Bolger bagged the Magners Ulster Derby as Change Of Velocity outclassed his rivals in the €100,000 feature (right).

Bolger, who has now four of the last five runnings of this race, looked to have a strong chance beforehand with this colt having won nicely at Gowran earlier in the month.

The Kevin Manning-ridden colt led with over a quarter of a mile to run and he asserted in good style over the last furlong to defeat the favourite, Shebergha, by three lengths.

The recent Gowran maiden winner denied the Bolgertrai­ned Active Approach by two and three quarter lengths. Earlier the card began with a smart display from the Colin Keaneridde­n Kafu in the two- year-old maiden.

The Ger Lyons inmate progressed from an encouragin­g debut at Curragh to defeat Rangefield Express by two and a quarter lengths.

Meanwhile, at Gowran trainer John O’Shea sent out his first winner for just under five years as Amschel landed the four-year-old conditions hurdle.

The Clonmel maiden hurdle winner wasn’t too fluent at the last two flights but he kept on strongly to see off Room To Roam by a length.

Amschel is likely to head to the Galway Festival and so too is Shay Barry’s Smitty Bacall who was a last gasp winner of the two and half miles maiden hurdle.
