CORBYN FACING UNITE ANGER ON BREXIT STANCE

- EXCLUSIVE BY NIGEL NELSON PoliticalEditor nigel.nelson@sundaymirror.co.uk

TWO thirds of members of Britain’s biggest union do not trust Jeremy Corbyn with Brexit.

Although the Labour leader scored nine points higher than Prime Minister Theresa May, Unite members say they disagree with the party’s approach to leaving the European Union by 52 to 29 per cent.

Some 13 pages of Brexit motions have been submitted to the union’s Brighton policy conference this week.

Most are critical of Labour’s position to quit the single market and scrap freedom of movement.

That will infuriate the union’s General Secretary Len McCluskey, a close ally of Mr Corbyn.

Nearly six out of 10 Unite members questioned by pollsters YouGov for the pressure group People’s Vote think Britain would be worse off outside the single market. And they would prefer to put free trade with the European their voice heard before a final decision is taken to leave the EU.” One motion calling for voters to have the final say on Brexit was submitted by automotive workers from the West Midlands.

It read: “Only now have voters started to see through the referendum campaigns and truly understand the implications and costs of leaving the European Union.”

More than eight in 10 of those questioned said that Brexit negotiations were going badly, while 68 per cent said they did not trust Mr Corbyn to make the right decisions.

Three quarters do not trust MPs to get it right either, while 77 per cent said the same about Mrs May.

Nearly six in 10 thought leaving the single market would be bad for jobs, while 51 per cent reckoned their families would be worse off.

YouGov questioned 913 Unite members between June 27 and 30.
