WAYNE LORDAN IT YET AGAIN

- BY RYAN MCELLIGOTT

WAYNE LORDAN took the honours at Gowran yesterday as he notched up a double on a low key afternoon ahead of the Galway Festival.

The multiple Group 1-winning rider got off the mark for the day as Dragon Roll secured a last gasp success in the two-year-old maiden.

The Jessica Harrington-trained filly had plenty to do approaching the last furlong but she picked up very nicely in the closing stages.

The 7/1 shot’s strong final furlong charge saw her edge out the odds on Queen Medb on the line.

“She was very green. Wayne said she was galloping up in the air and that she was rolling around a bit but she flew home when she got going,” said the trainer.

“As she was quite green there I would like to go for a winner’s race rather than pitch her in at the deep end,” she added.

Lordan then followed up on Henry de Bromhead’s Roibeard in the 50-80 rated nine furlongs handicap.

The 14/1 chance, who has run a number of good races at this track, was notching up his first win for two years.

Roibeard struck the front early in the straight and maintained a strong gallop to come home two and a quarter lengths ahead of Dream Focus.

Donnacha O’Brien maintained his impressive form as he partnered his father’s Erin to a straight forward success in the fillies maiden.

Elsewhere, the Declan McDonogh-ridden Check Your Pockets denied Waitingfortheday a five timer in the fillies handicap.
