Shades of 2013 with ace Jason

- BY PAT NOLAN

CLARE drew on the spirit of 2013 as a late, late leveller sent their gripping All-Ireland semifinal with Galway to a replay.

There were shades of Domhnall O’Donovan’s famous last gasp equaliser in the 2013 All-Ireland final against Cork as sub Jason McCarthy levelled the tie for the eighth time in the 94th minute.

“We never gave up, but neither did Galway,” said Clare full-forward John Conlon, who slotted 0-4.

“Look, it was fantastic stuff, it was exhilarating. At the end, James Skehill and myself were in around the square with a minute to go and we just said no one deserves to lose this.

“Thankfully Jason got thatgreat score at the end. It had similarities to Domhnall’s score.

“Lads were working it up the field, it just shows the subs who came on, I think David Fitzgerald was involved as well.

“Just to have that composure and leadership to go on and do that in the last puck of the ball meant a lot to us. Hopefully it will give us a big push for next week,” he added, ahead of the replay at Semple Stadium next Sunday.

Clare looked poised for a famous victory when another sub Aron Shanagher put them ahead for the first time with a goal in the second period of extra time – his first appearance since a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained last November – before Galway pushed ahead again.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Clare joint boss Donal Moloney (right). “As cruciate ligament recuperations go it’s incredible.

“That was one of his trademarks in terms of that catch and turn and bang. He’s a very driven young man.”

Galway boss Micheal Donoghue described the game as “an epic encounter” after his side saw an early nine-point lead clawed back.

“Both teams probably had chances in normal time and in extra-time, but, look, I’m really proud of our lads, they worked really hard.

Donoghue said it was too early to speculate on injuries to star men

Gearoid McInerney and

Joe Canning.
