The Stranger Diaries

- Jodi Picoult Hodder & Stoughton. Out Tuesday James Oswald Wildfire. Out Thursday

This is easily the most immersive and enjoyable game I’ve yet to try on VR.

Using both move controllers and the PS4 camera, the boxer on screen mirrors your every move. The power, speed and accuracy of your hands displays on screen with precision accuracy.

After an explosive start, your boxing skills are put to the test with a range of gym exercises.

Players bring Creed through the ranks competing in everything from nightclub brawls to realistic boxing bouts to screaming crowds in the centre of Everton’s Goodison Park stadium. I found the best part of the career mode is when you start a training montage.

You’ll be put to the test by Sylvester Stallone himself with pad work, punch bags, speed balls and even running on the treadmill. And all of this while the Rocky soundtrack rings in your ears.

It’s so realistic it might even be time to cancel your gym membership!

Teacher Clare’s life begins to imitate art – in a horribly spooky fashion – when her colleague Ella’s murder is the start of a chain of sinister events that echo a centuries-old ghost story.

Confiding her fears in her diary, she realises even her private thoughts are no longer safe. Narrated in turn by Clare, her daughter Georgie, and spiky investigating cop Harbinder, this is a contemporary tale, but it harks back to the mysteries of the Victorian age.

It has an atmospheric coastal setting, and more than a dash of the supernatural – a love letter to Gothic fiction. Perfect winter read.

A Spark of Light In a women’s clinic in Mississippi, a gunman has taken hostages – and claimed victims. Following seven characters whose lives converge on that bloody day, this timely, powerful and emotive novel examines the issue of abortion rights.

No Time to Cry After DC Constance Fairchild finds her best friend and fellow undercover cop Pete shot dead, she’s blamed by her colleagues, while forced to flee London, pursued by dark forces. Pacy, action packed and with a really rather fabulous heroine.
