PSNI appeal after man & woman arrested over ‘shocking’ killing
A MAN killed yesterday was the brother of a man murdered more than a decade ago.
The body of Pat Ward, 30 was found in an alleyway at McCrea Park, Clogher, Co Tyrone, in the early hours.
His 23-year-old brother Tom was murdered outside his parents’ Co Sligo home in 2007.
Police said a postmortem would be carried out but the death is being treated as murder. They have not released details surrounding the tragedy.
Mr Ward, understood to be a member of the Traveller community, was originally from Co Sligo but had settled in the Co Tyrone village.
Blaine Gaffney, a Fine Gael representative, went to primary school with Mr Ward and expressed his disbelief yesterday.
He told the Sunday Mirror: “It comes as a massive shock to hear this tragic news.
“I knew Pat from attending the Mercy Primary School in Sligo and I know his extended family who still live in Sligo.
“My thoughts and condolences go to the family.
“I would call on anyone with information about this incident to contact the PSNI.” Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew said there was palpable shock in the area.
She added: “News that a man’s body was found in an alleyway in the McCrea Park area of Clogher has shocked the local community.
“The PSNI have said they are treating this as a murder investigation.
“Police are investigating and I would encourage anyone with information that could help to bring it forward.
“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time.”
A man and woman were arrested on suspicion of murder.
Det Chief Insp Peter McKenna, from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team, said: “The body of a man was discovered in an alleyway in McCrea Park at around 8.15am this morning.
“A postmortem has yet to take place but I am treating his death as murder. “A 33-year-old female and a 23-year-old male have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody at this
time.”
